BIG PHARMA TROJAN HORSES PERMEATE SUPPLEMENT INDUSTRY
By Byron J. Richards, CCN
December 5, 2006
Today I received an e-mail from the Natural Products Association (NPA) asking me to support the Dietary Supplement and Non-Prescription Drug Consumer Protection Act (the “AER bill”). Apparently they do not know I am one of the most outspoken critics of this legislation. I have already posted two articles on this topic for NWV, one in July and one in November. The NPA, formerly the NNFA (National Nutritional Foods Association), is the largest trade association for ingredient suppliers and health food stores. This group, along with CRN (the Council for Responsible Nutrition) has been taken over by Big Pharma and is selling out the supplement industry.
You as a consumer must weigh in on this subject before it is too late. Your options for effective natural solutions are in serious jeopardy. Immediate action is required to defend health freedom and your right to have therapeutic choices in natural health options.
Unfortunately, it is up to “we the American people” to save the supplement industry from traitorous groups pretending to be on your side. There is a serious attempt underway to push this bill through prior to the close of the lame duck session (apparently to end on December 8). Click here to take action now, tell your congressional leaders to vote no on S. 3546/H.R. 6168.
This is what the December 4, 2006, NPA e-mail stated:
We’re contacting you because an important bill may soon be voted on in Congress. This legislation, which the Natural Products Association – along with the other leading dietary supplement trade groups – supports, is, S. 3546 in the Senate and H.R. 6168 in the House of Representatives.
Yes, these are the names of the bills and they are rotten to the core for consumers and the supplement industry.
Contrary to what you may have heard, this legislation will not affect the availability of dietary supplements or lead to closures of health food stores.
Wrong, an outright lie! This legislation may drastically reduce the availability of therapeutic supplements by linking them with adverse effects actually caused by drugs. True, health food stores are not likely to close. They will keep selling the lower quality Big Pharma brands, like One-A-Day (Bayer) and Centrum (Wyeth). About 80% of the supplement market is not really concerned about your health; this includes big box stores, most network marketing companies, drug stores, super markets, and internet fly-by-night operations. Big Pharma knows these brands pose no competition to their monopolistic drug cartel. Rather, Big Pharma wants all effective nutrition off the market – the really great products that fix diabetes, resolve depression, prevent heart disease, enable weight loss, fix fibromyalgia, and help a person survive cancer treatment. Big Pharma wants a sick America and will do anything to keep people in poor health and on multiple toxic drugs.
It’s also important to remember that the legislation would require only serious – such as life threatening– experiences, not just any complaint, to be reported. And keep in mind that the government already tracks adverse experiences that could be related to dietary supplements.
The FDA is currently unable to properly track adverse events caused by drugs and does not even know which drugs are safe. Over 100,000 Americans are killed each year by drugs, and at least 3 million are injured so severely it requires hospitalization. The FDA already has an adequate MedWatch reporting system for serious adverse events for dietary supplements. The proposed bill calls for supplement manufacturers to keep track of all complaints any person reports, serious or not, a standard far stricter than truly dangerous drugs! This is absolutely absurd.
If such legislation becomes law it will be used as a vehicle for the FDA to remove supplements from the market based on hearsay data. There is no mechanism in place for any supplement company to collect health information on the person reporting, including existing medications or health history. This means the legislation can and will be used as a witch hunt against effective natural options for health. Certainly, the lawyers at NPA and those supporting this bill are licking their chops at all the business this legislation will generate for them.
What’s new is that manufacturers who get reports of consumers being seriously harmed by their products can’t keep them secret. While we believe such occurrences are extremely rare, if they do happen, reporting is the right thing to do.
True serious adverse events from dietary supplements are extremely rare and already covered by MedWatch. Any medical doctor or patient believing a supplement has injured them can easily fill out a MedWatch form. No one has any objection to serious AER reporting. That is not what this bill is really all about. It is about gutting DSHEA (Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994), the legislation that enables American consumers to have more options for health than in any other country in the world. By implying there is a safety problem (which there isn’t) and making supplement companies defend themselves, the burden of proof is shifted from the FDA to supplement companies, thereby drastically changing existing law in favor of Big Pharma and away from access to natural health options granted by DSHEA. The FDA already does what it can to discriminate against small and innovative companies.
If H.R. 6168 and S. 3546 are passed and become law, they will amend the federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act to require the reporting of “serious” adverse events for both over the counter (OTC) drugs and dietary supplements to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
That is true. However, there is no way to differentiate between drug-drug interactions, drug-nutrient interactions, or food poisoning, meaning there is no way to accurately judge what is causing a problem. Furthermore, the real issue is the safety of drugs, not supplements. Until the FDA has a working system for drug safety, there is no way for the FDA to judge supplement safety. There is a reason the Institute of Medicine reported that the FDA is dysfunctional and not able to protect Americans from harm. Its drugs!!!! – not vitamins.
While the Natural Products Association understands that the mandatory reporting requirements of the AER bill will add to manufacturers’ record keeping responsibilities, we believe the bill will benefit the industry in the long run.
This opinion must be coming from the lawyers that stand to make a fortune defending supplement companies from frivolous attacks relating to non-serious adverse events. Also, doctors will attempt to blame vitamins for the devastating side effects of their commonly prescribed medications. Dangerous drugs, like statins, are in widespread use and making many Americans very ill and even causing premature death. When someone has heart failure from taking statins, doctors will try to blame it on vitamin E. It would be a major travesty to pass legislation that allows the side effects of dangerous drugs to be reported in such as way as to remove safe and effective supplements from the market. The Big Pharma goal is to maintain its monopoly at any cost. It is an agenda based on drug sales and a callous disregard for human life.
First, by helping to change the perception by critics of the dietary supplement industry that it is not well regulated.
This is the Big Lie. The truth is that supplements are safer than food. Supplements are not drugs. Critics of the dietary supplement industry are all getting a pile of money from Big Pharma and they pretend to be upset about network marketing companies making bogus health claims, companies with a history of paying off Senators Hatch and Harkin for protection. Since most of these companies that seemingly cause problems are members of CRN and NNFA, why don’t these junk trade organizations clean up their own members? There is no need to put out of business the many nutritional companies providing a true quality service to millions of Americans in true need of real help, unless of course you are simply trying to put your own competition out of business.
Second, over time, the recordkeeping and reporting requirements will substantiate what many in the industry have been saying all along – that the safety record of dietary supplements is exemplary, especially when compared to other health-related products.
Obviously, true serious AERs will be very infrequent, unlike the several thousand people dying each week at the hands of Big Pharma. However, the recordkeeping requirement for non-serious adverse events opens the door for unlimited FDA harassment of any company. Since the FDA is currently bought and paid for by Big Pharma, that is a huge problem.
Ultimately, safety reporting is the right thing to do for a responsible industry that puts consumers first.
In a world where Big Pharma and the FDA have spent decades trying to obliterate competition, such a naïve statement is designed to appeal to “reasonableness” and “political correctness.” NPA has no concept of integrity to the US Constitution or what makes America great. If anyone wants to believe the utopian garbage put forth by NPA, try to get the statement to apply to Big Pharma.
The e-mail is then signed by the Natural Products Association. Yes, not one person in this pathetic group had the nerve to put their name on this embarrassing e-mail. I wonder who wrote it. Was it Senator Hatch’s younger son who works at NPA? Was it Senator Hatch’s older son who lobbies for NPA? Or was it one of the Big Pharma members sitting on the NPA board? Companies supporting this horrid legislation and the related anti-American globalization agenda of Codex Alimentarius include Mannatech, Herbalife, Shacklee, Now Foods, Dr. Weil Vitamins, Jarrow, and many more.
Besides faxing, phoning, and e-mailing Congress to vote no on S.3546, any person purchasing supplements should demand that whomever they buy supplements from is not a member of CRN or NPA. Health food stores and ingredient suppliers should withdraw from these bogus Big Pharma pro-globalization organizations. If you need more facts to convince you of the magnitude of this problem, read my book Fight for Your Health: Exposing the FDA’s Betrayal of America. If you buy supplements from such companies or stores then answer this simple question: why are you paying money to be shot in the back?

Kale and Potato Soup
By Cait Johnson, author of Witch in the Kitchen
Kale belongs to the same cancer-fighting family that includes broccoli and cabbage, but its sweetness and superior cold-weather keeping qualities make it a popular autumn ingredient. Kale and Potato Soup, with its moony potatoes and earthy kale, would have made a perfect potluck offering for a recent full moon celebration around a bonfire. It is simple earthy cooking at its best: the kale and tender potatoes combine beautifully with onions and garlic to make a simple soup rich in vitamins, minerals, and pleasure.
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 medium onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
3 large potatoes, chopped
2 teaspoons dried thyme
6 cups vegetable stock
1 bunch kale, rinsed, stemmed, and coarsely chopped
Dollop of sour cream and sprinkling of toasted pumpkin seeds, optional garnish
1. Heat the olive oil in a large soup pot over medium heat, add onion and garlic, and saute, stirring occasionally, until onion is softened, being careful not to brown the garlic. Add potatoes, stirring to coat with oil. Sprinkle with thyme.
2. Add stock and bring to a boil, then cover, reduce heat, and simmer for 10 minutes. Add kale and continue cooking another 15 minutes, until potatoes are soft and kale is tender.
3. Lightly mash the potatoes with a potato masher and serve soup in warmed bowls with a dollop of sour cream and a sprinkling of pumpkin seeds, if desired.

Have you ever experienced the benefits of a "Green" Cleanse?
I know it may sound weird, but it's one of the best things you can do for your health.
I try to do this at least once a year.
During an entire week, have nothing but fruit and green smoothies.
Usually by the end you'll be bursting with energy and enthusiasm (and looking a lot better too!).
This is something you can do on your own, but often it's best to have support and coaching.
I wanted to let you know that as part of our Green for Life Program, we're offering a Group Cleanse which starts November 13, the week before Thanksgiving!
This 7-day event will take you on a journey of cleansing and transformation, as the group who signed up GREEN FOR LIFE will get to go on a "Green Cleanse" each appropriate to her own health and desire.
This is a *live* event with coaching, that you can do from the comfort of your home.
This cleanse will help you overcome cravings, detoxify, release some weight (if necessary), and experience more vitality, and get in control of your eating habits.
After that, I don't know when the 'Green Cleanse' will be offered again. Probably not before the spring.

BEIJING (Reuters) - Humans are stripping nature at an unprecedented rate and will need two planets' worth of natural resources every year by 2050 on current trends, the WWF conservation group said on Tuesday.
Populations of many species, from fish to mammals, had fallen by about a third from 1970 to 2003 largely because of human threats such as pollution, clearing of forests and overfishing, the group also said in a two-yearly report.
"For more than 20 years we have exceeded the earth's ability to support a consumptive lifestyle that is unsustainable and we cannot afford to continue down this path," WWF Director-General James Leape said, launching the WWF's 2006 Living Planet Report.
"If everyone around the world lived as those in America, we would need five planets to support us," Leape, an American, said in Beijing.
People in the United Arab Emirates were placing most stress per capita on the planet ahead of those in the United States, Finland and Canada, the report said.
Australia was also living well beyond its means.
The average Australian used 6.6 "global" hectares to support their developed lifestyle, ranking behind the United States and Canada, but ahead of the United Kingdom, Russia, China and Japan.
"If the rest of the world led the kind of lifestyles we do here in Australia, we would require three-and-a-half planets to provide the resources we use and to absorb the waste," said Greg Bourne, WWF-Australia chief executive officer.
Everyone would have to change lifestyles -- cutting use of fossil fuels and improving management of everything from farming to fisheries.
"As countries work to improve the well-being of their people, they risk bypassing the goal of sustainability," said Leape, speaking in an energy-efficient building at Beijing's prestigous Tsinghua University.
"It is inevitable that this disconnect will eventually limit the abilities of poor countries to develop and rich countries to maintain their prosperity," he added.
The report said humans' "ecological footprint" -- the demand people place on the natural world -- was 25 percent greater than the planet's annual ability to provide everything from food to energy and recycle all human waste in 2003.
In the previous report, the 2001 overshoot was 21 percent.
"On current projections humanity, will be using two planets' worth of natural resources by 2050 -- if those resources have not run out by then," the latest report said.
"People are turning resources into waste faster than nature can turn waste back into resources."
"Humanity's footprint has more than tripled between 1961 and 2003," it said. Consumption has outpaced a surge in the world's population, to 6.5 billion from 3 billion in 1960. U.N. projections show a surge to 9 billion people around 2050.
It said that the footprint from use of fossil fuels, whose heat-trapping emissions are widely blamed for pushing up world temperatures, was the fastest-growing cause of strain.
Leape said China, home to a fifth of the world's population and whose economy is booming, was making the right move in pledging to reduce its energy consumption by 20 percent over the next five years.
"Much will depend on the decisions made by China, India and other rapidly developing countries," he added.
The WWF report also said that an index tracking 1,300 vetebrate species -- birds, fish, amphibians, reptiles and mammals -- showed that populations had fallen for most by about 30 percent because of factors including a loss of habitats to farms.
Among species most under pressure included the swordfish and the South African Cape vulture. Those bucking the trend included rising populations of the Javan rhinoceros and the northern hairy-nosed wombat in Australia.

For years, you've been able to choose foods with less fat or fewer additives. Now, with EWG's 4th edition of the popular Shopper's Guide to Pesticides in Produce, you can minimize your chemical exposure in the produce aisle.
EWG always recommends organic, but we know you can't always find it. Our new Guide features the 12 fruits and veggies with the most and least pesticides so you'll know which ones to buy organic, and which conventionally-grown ones are okay when organic isn't available.
How'd we do it? EWG analyzed over 42,000 of the latest government tests for pesticide residues on commonly-eaten fruits and vegetables. We then ranked the results based on six measures of pesticide loads, after washing and peeling. Click here to download your printer-friendly PDF Guide now.
There is growing consensus in the scientific community that small doses of pesticides and other chemicals can adversely affect people, especially during vulnerable periods of fetal development and childhood when exposures can have long lasting effects. Because the toxic effects of pesticides are worrisome, not well understood, or in some cases completely unstudied, shoppers are wise to minimize exposure to pesticides whenever possible.
Nearly all of the data used to create these lists already considers how people typically wash and prepare produce (for example, apples are washed before testing, bananas are peeled). While washing and rinsing fresh produce may reduce levels of some pesticides, it does not eliminate them. Peeling also reduces exposures, but valuable nutrients often go down the drain with the peel. The best option is to eat a varied diet, wash all produce, and choose organic when possible to reduce exposure to potentially harmful chemicals.

Japanese researchers found that workers on rotating shifts were four times more likely to develop prostate cancer than those working regular hours, whether on day or night shifts.
Shift work has also been linked to an increased risk of breast and bowel cancers.
The study, which examined more than 14,000 workers over eight years, also found that night shift workers were at a slightly increased risk of prostate cancer. Eighty percent of the workers studied worked daytime hours, 7 percent worked nights, and about 13 percent rotated their work schedules from night to day.
The reason for the effects may be reduced secretion of the hormone melatonin in those who work irregular hours and, to a lesser extent, nights. Reduced secretion of melatonin has been linked to increased production of sex hormones, which help to regulate prostate tissues.

Dr. Mercola's Comment:
Our modern culture requires that many of us work completely unnatural hours. We need police and fire protection and health care workers to be available in emergency rooms.
Unfortunately, what many people who work these shifts don't realize is the incredibly increased risk they put themselves at for early death. You simply can't violate foundational biological rhythms and not pay a price.
Just because some genius developed the ability to create inexpensive artificial light a century ago does not give us permission to ignore centuries of biology, which dictate foundational biological processes.
Getting the right amount of sleep every day, and getting it at the right time, can make such a profound difference in your health. If you happen to be one of the unfortunate people who are involved in shift work I would encourage you to place a high goal to change that as soon as possible.
Personally, there are very few things that affect me as much as not getting a good night's sleep. I don't need much, but -- if I can get a good solid six to six and a half hours -- I have no problems going to sleep around 10 p.m. and bouncing out of bed at 4 a.m. to 4:30 a.m., ready and raring to tackle the day and achieve my goals.
It is also important to sleep in complete darkness. Many do not appreciate that the tiniest bit of light can disrupt your body's natural circadian rhythms, in addition to the production of melatonin by your pineal gland, which is why it's so important for you to sleep in complete darkness.
This is one of the primary reasons for this study's observed increase in cancer. Melatonin is a very powerful cancer controller and when you decrease your production of it your risk of cancer climbs.
Also be sure to get a healthy amount of sun, another important way to slash your risk of prostate cancer. Not only will it increase your vitamin D levels, but bright sun exposure during the day will help your body make more melatonin at night if you are sleeping in a dark room.
So, let's get your sleeping right and get to bed when you were designed to. If you are having trouble with sleeping I urge you to review my 29 secrets for getting a good night's sleep safely, effectively and without a drug, including:
Avoid before-bed snacks, particularly grains and sugars. This will raise blood sugar and inhibit sleep. Later, when blood sugar drops too low (hypoglycemia), you might wake up and not be able to fall back asleep.
No TV right before bed. Even better, get the TV out of the bedroom or even out of the house, completely. It is too stimulating to the brain, and it will cause you to take longer to fall asleep.
Wear socks to bed. Due to the fact that they have the poorest circulation, the feet often feel cold before the rest of the body. A study has shown that wearing socks reduces night wakings.
Reduce or avoid using as many drugs as possible. Many medications, both prescription and over-the-counter, may have effects on sleep.
Avoid caffeine. A recent study showed that in some people, caffeine is not metabolized efficiently, and therefore they can feel the effects long after consuming it. So an afternoon cup of coffee (or even tea) will keep some people from falling asleep.

Robert Young, Ph.D.
Consuming processed meats increases the risk of a cancerous pancreas, says new research conducted at the University of Hawaii that followed nearly 200,000 men and women for seven years. According to lead study author Ute Nothlings, people who consumed the most processed meats (hot dogs and sausage) showed a 67% increased risk of a cancerous pancreas over those who consumed little or no meat products.
But researchers failed to accurately identify the culprit responsible for this increased risk of a cancerous pancreas, says one author. The true cause of the heightened cancer risk is the widespread use of an acidic carcinogenic precursor ingredient known as sodium nitrite acid by food processing companies, says nutritionist Mike Adams, author of the just-published Grocery Warning manual at: http://www.TruthPublishing.com/GroceryWarning.html
Nearly all processed meats are made with sodium nitrite acid: breakfast sausage, hot dogs, jerkies, bacon, pepperoni, lunch meat, and even meats in canned soup products. Yet this acidic ingredient is a precursor to highly carcinogenic or acidic nitrosamines -- potent cancerous-causing acidic chemicals that accelerate the formation and growth of cancerous acidic cells throughout the body. When consumers eat sodium nitrite acid in popular meat products, acidic nitrosamines are formed in the body and prosion the cells that make up our tissues and organs, leading to cancerous cells of the colon and pancreas, says Adams.
"Sodium nitrite acid is a dangerous, cancer-causing ingredient that has no place in the human food supply," he explains. The USDA actually tried to ban sodium nitrite acid in the 1970's, but was preempted by the meat processing industry, which relies on the ingredient as a color fixer to make foods look more visually appealing. "The meat industry uses sodium nitrite acid to sell more meat products at the expense of public health," says Adams. "And this new research clearly demonstrates the link between the consumption of processed meats and cancer."
A cancerous pancreas isn't the only negative side effect of consuming processed meats such as hot dogs. Acid blood or Leukemia also skyrockets by 700% following the consumption of hot dogs. (Preston-Martin, S. et al. "N-nitroso compounds and childhood brain tumors: A case-control study." Cancer Res. 1982; 42:5240-5.) Other links between processed meats and dis-ease are covered in detail in the Grocery Warning manual.
Adams wrote Grocery Warning to warn consumers about the toxic or acidic, dis-ease-causing ingredients found in everyday foods and groceries. "There are certain ingredients found in common grocery products that directly promote cancer, diabetes, heart disease, depression, Alzheimer's disease, osteoporosis and even behavioral disorders," Adams explains. His Grocery Warning manual covers them all, teaching readers how to prevent and even help reverse chronic dis-eases by avoiding acidic foods and acidic food ingredients that cause dis-ease.
According to Adams, consumers can help reduce the cancerous-causing effects of sodium nitrite acid by consuming protective antioxidants before meals, such as vitamin E, glutathione and N-acetyl cysteine which offers some protection. The only safe strategy is to avoid sodium nitrite acid completely.
Adams especially warns expectant mothers to avoid consuming sodium nitrite acid due to the greatly heightened risk of brain tumors in infants. Parents are also warned to avoid feeding their children products that contain sodium nitrite acid, including all popular hot dogs, bacon, jerkies, breakfast sausages and pizzas made with pepperoni or other processed meats. "Sodium nitrite acid is especially dangerous to fetuses, infants and children," says Adams.
Sadly, nearly all school lunch programs currently serve school children meat products containing sodium nitrite acid. Hospital cafeterias also serve this cancerous-causing ingredient to patients. Sodium nitrite acid is found in literally thousands of different menu items at fast food restaurants and dining establishments. "The use of this ingredient is widespread," says Adams, and it's part of the reason we're seeing skyrocketing rates of cancer in every society that consumes large quantities of processed meats."
Some companies are now offering nitrite-free and nitrate-free meat products, which are far healthier alternatives, but those products are difficult to find and are typically available only at health food stores or natural grocers. Consumers can look for "Nitrite-free" or "Nitrate-free" labels when shopping for meat products. They can also purchase fresh meats, which are almost never prepared with sodium nitrite acid. The best solution is to never eat meat. It is always acidic even without the sodium nitrite acid, including uric acid, phosphoric acid and sulphuric acid.
The new research on processed meats points to an acidic chemical toxin as the cause of the increased cancerous risk. A heightened cancerous risk of 67% is "gigantic," warns Adams. "This is clearly not due to macronutrient differences. This is the kind of risk increase you only see with ingredient toxicity. Something in these processed meats is poisoning people, and the evidence points straight to sodium nitrite acid."

WASHINGTON - Oslo teens who drank the most sugary soft drinks also had more
mental health problems such as hyperactivity and distress, Norwegian
researchers reported on Thursday.
Their study of more than 5,000 Norwegian 15- and 16-year-olds showed a clear
and direct association between soft drink intake and hyperactivity, and a
more complex link with other mental and behavioral disorders.
They surveyed the students, asking them how many fizzy soft drinks with
sugar they had a day, and then questions from a standard questionnaire used
to assess mental health.
The teens who reported skipping breakfast and lunch were among the heaviest
soft drink consumers, Dr. Lars Lien and colleagues at the University of Oslo
"There was a strong association between soft drink consumption and mental
health problems among Oslo 10th graders," they wrote in their report,
published in the American Journal of Public Health.
"This association remained significant after adjustment for social,
behavioral and food-related disorders."
Most of the students said they drank anywhere between one and six servings
of soft drinks per week.
Those who drank no soft drinks at all were more likely than moderate
drinkers to have mental health symptoms, the researchers said. But those who
drank the most -- more than six servings a week - had the highest scores.
For hyperactivity, there was a direct linear relationship -- the more sodas
a teen drank, the most symptoms of hyperactivity he or she had.
The worst problems were seen in boys and girls who drank four or more soft
drinks a day. Ten percent of the boys and 2 percent of the girls drank this
The researchers said it was possible that other substances in the soft
drinks, such as caffeine, were to blame for the symptoms, and they did not
check other possible sources of refined sugar in the children's diets.
But they said many of the teens were clearly drinking too many sugary
drinks. Norway's recommended intake is 10 percent of the day's total
calories from sugar and the researchers said at least a quarter of the boys
were getting this much from soft drinks alone.
"One simple and effective measure to reduce soft drink consumption in this
age group would be to remove soft drink machines from schools and other
public places where adolescents gather," they wrote.

Ten Reasons to Eat Organic Foods by Chrys Ostrander
Links by Order of Appearance
1)Stop Eating Chemicals
Organic foods must, by law (WSDA) (USDA), be free of synthetic chemicals
such as those which are easily detected on conventionally grown fruits,
vegetables and grains. "Conventional produce" is the type available in most supermarket produce sections. While far from over, there are signs that chemical abuse in American farming is declining and some of the most hazardous chemicals are no longer available to American farmers.
Unfortunately, under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the World Trade Organization (WTO), the General Agreement on Tarrifs and Trade (GATT) rules and others, there are very few barriers to trade with respect to imported food which has a higher likelihood of contamination. Chemicals which have been banned for use in the United States (but which are still manufactured by U.S. Companies) are still routinely used agriculturally in other parts of the world. Due to a poor testing program for imported foods, these banned chemicals come back to our dinner plates and into our bodies via the deadly "Circle of Poison" unless we shift to an organic diet. USDA estimates some 20% of our fruits and vegetables are imported. Only 1-2% of these are inspected for pesticide residues. FDA's tests of imported produce
can detect only about half of the chemicals available worldwide.
US-EPA gets more than 2,000 notices of the export of unregistered pesticides yearly.
Recipient countries don't have to report whether these pesticides are
applied to produce which is later exported to the U.S., and FDA does not
test for them. Importers are rarely penalized for violations. Critics
contend that inspections do not adequately protect the public. It is ironic, however, that recent testing shows the highest levels of the most toxic residues is on domestic (U.S. Grown) produce. Many of the chemicals now in use were approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the U.S. Long before extensive research had been done linking them to cancer. It is now estimated that 60% of all herbicides, 90% of all fungicides and 30% of all pesticides are carcinogenic
Now, for the first time, because of a new federal law, every chemical in
use and proposed will be tested to determine whether organ damage, birth
defects, micarriages, sterility, endocrine system problems and other risks are associated with each chemical. The latest studies show unequivocally that it's safer to eat organic foods than ones produced using chemical pesticides. You can start eating clean, good, organic food right now!
2)Protect Your Children
Children are, as a rule, more vulnerable to toxins than are adults. This is why children especially should be fed an organic diet and taught how to resist junk-food culture. It may take years before many ailments associated with chronic or even episodic contact with toxins become apparent. Children,we hope, do have many healthy years ahead of them. In the aftermath of the Alar scare of the 1980's, a study concluded that the average child is exposed to four times as many cancer causing pesticides in food than are adults, based on the types of foods children are most likely to eat. Food choice can have a substantial effect on a child's future health.
3)Preserve Water Quality and Air Quality
Water and air are our most important resources. Infiltration of pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers and other soluable chemicals into surface and groundwater is a major source of concern all across North America. These dangerous synthetic chemicals are found in many cases in significant concentrations even in water supplies now being consumed by millions of people. Some herbicides actually evaporate into the air after application and drift for miles (still having bad effects on plant life!) and some agricultural chemicals bind to dust particles which you breath in during dust storms. In the United States, massive testing of municipal water systems has shown that the principal sources of drinking water for more than half the population have been contaminated. Right next door to Spokane in Airway Heights the city water supply has been declared undrinkable due to elevated nitrates, a sign of fertilizer pollution. Organic farmers do not contribute to water pollution. Organic livestock farms are prohibited from being point sources of nitrate.
4)Prevent Soil Erosion
Across North America, soil is eroding seven times faster than it can be
replaced. According to Cornell University, it costs us about $44 billion a year. Conventional farming has been guilty of extracting wealth from the land at the expense of our topsoil. Poor cultivation and cultural practices have created a worldwide topsoil crisis. Organic farmers are bound by law and oath to have a soil building program in place for maintaining and returning the tilth of this precious resource.
5)Protect Farm Worker Health
Farm workers in this country and abroad are exposed to the highest
concentrations of agricultural poisons of any segment of the population and the devastation to them and their families is well documented. These are the people who tend and harvest our food, they deserve better. Help in their struggle for a safe work environment and vote with your pocketbook by buying organic foods.
6)Support Small Scale Local Farmers
Most organic farms are small, independently owned and operated or family
farms of less than 100 acres (some are pretty big). By buying locally
produced foods, you are keeping local farms viable; you are not contributing to the environmental and social costs of the worldwide transport of foods or supporting a system based on the exploitation of third world labor. You are helping your community attain food security. It is a myth that huge, corporate agribusiness is more efficient than the small farmer.
Organic farming is accomplished with less energy consumption. Inputs like fertilizer are naturally occurring and require less processing than
substances manufactured by huge chemical companies. Organic food generally travels less miles from farm to market saving energy in transport. Many organic farmers incorporate alternative and renewable energy sources into their farming/homesteading systems.
Many large scale agri-businesses operate by the method of mono-cropping-- the practice of planting large plots of land with the same crop, year after year. This depletes the soil of nutrients causing farmers to become more and more dependent on fertilizers. Also, this upsets natures pest controls by reducing species variety. Different plants attract different bugs and the more bugs around a farm, the higher the percentage of beneficial insects in the population. Solid blocks of one crop actually attracts pests who like to eat that crop. Increased genetic resistance to pesticides has caused crop losses to double in the last 50 years. Organic growers practice methods and techniques like crop rotation , cover cropping and composting which directly address these problems of modern agriculture by re-learning how to work with
nature, not wage combat against her. Clearly more bio-diversity is necessary in farming and buying organic supports this movement.
9)Organics Aren't Really More Expensive
Many hidden costs are involved with the buying of conventionally produced food products. These hidden costs include billions of dollars in federal agriculture and energy subsides favoring big business. Chemical regulation and testing, hazardous waste disposal, environmental damage and cleanup, illnesses and hospitalizations are other hidden costs. Low prices of conventional foods are also a signal that the farm workers did not recieve a fair wage.
10)Organic Foods Taste Better. Taste is hard to quantify, but science does tell us that organic foods do have higher levels of vitamins and minerals than conventional foods. It only makes sense that food grown in soil that has been nourished and cared for is more nutritious and will end up tasting better. Why not find out?
11) Organic Foods are Required to be Free From Genetically Engineered or
Modified Ingredients (GMOs). Science is now suggesting GMOs pose
significant health risks to people and animals that eat them and it is
certain that GMOs pose unacceptable risks to bio-diversity and natural

Subject: Warning about Splenda from an MD
James Bowen, M.D., A physician, biochemist, and survivor of aspartame
poisoning warns about yet another synthetic sweetener, Splenda.
HAWAII‹The chemical sucralose, marketed as "Splenda", has replaced aspartame
as the #1 artificial sweetener in foods and beverages. Aspartame has been
forced out by increasing public awareness that it is both a neurotoxin and
an underlying cause of chronic illness worldwide. Dr. James Bowen,
Researcher and biochemist, reports:
"Splenda/sucralose is simply chlorinated sugar; a chlorocarbon. Common
chlorocarbons include carbon tetrachloride, trichlorethelene and methylene
chloride, all deadly. Chlorine is nature's Doberman attack dog, a highly
excitable, ferocious atomic element employed as a biocide in bleach,
disinfectants, insecticide, WWI poison gas and hydrochloric acid.
"Sucralose is a molecule of sugar chemically manipulated to surrender three
hydroxyl groups (hydrogen + oxygen) and replace them with three chlorine
atoms. Natural sugar is a hydrocarbon built around 12 carbon atoms. When
turned into Splenda it becomes a chlorocarbon, in the family of Chlorodane,
Lindane and DDT,
"It is logical to ask why table salt, which also contains chlorine, is safe
while Splenda/sucralose is toxic? Because salt isn't a chlorocarbon. When
molecular chemistry binds sodium to chlorine to make salt carbon isn't
included. Sucralose and salt are as different as oil and water.
"Unlike sodium chloride, chlorocarbons are never nutritionally compatible
with our metabolic processes and are wholly incompatible with normal human
metabolic functioning. When chlorine is chemically reacted into
carbon-structured organic compounds to make chlorocarbons, the carbon and
chlorine atoms bind to each other by mutually sharing electrons in their
outer shells. This arrangement adversely affects human metabolism because
our mitochondrial and cellular enzyme systems are designed to completely
utilize organic molecules containing carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and
other compatible nutritional elements.
"By this process chlorocarbons such as sucralose deliver chlorine directly
into our cells through normal metabolization. This makes them effective
insecticides and preservatives. Preservatives must kill anything alive to
prevent bacterial decomposition."
Dr. Bowen believes ingested chlorocarbon damage continues with the formation
of other toxins: "Any chlorocarbons not directly excreted from the body
intact can cause immense damage to the processes of human metabolism and,
eventually, our internal organs. The liver is a detoxification organ which
deals with ingested poisons. Chlorocarbons damage the hepatocytes, the
liver's metabolic cells, and destroy them. In test animals Splenda produced
swollen livers, as do all chlorocarbon poisons, and also calcified the
kidneys of test animals in toxicity studies. The brain and nervous system
are highly subject to metabolic toxicities and solvency damages by these
chemicals. Their high solvency attacks the human nervous system and many
other body systems including genetics and the immune function. Thus,
chlorocarbon poisoning can cause cancer, birth defects, and immune system
destruction. These are well known effects of Dioxin and PCBs which are known
Dr. Bowen continues: "Just like aspartame, which achieved marketplace
approval by the Food and Drug Administration when animal studies clearly
demonstrated its toxicity, sucralose also failed in clinical trials with
animals. Aspartame created brain tumors in rats. Sucralose has been found to
shrink thymus glands (the biological seat of immunity) and produce liver
inflammation in rats and mice.
"In the coming months we can expect to see a river of media hype expounding
the virtues of Splenda/sucralose. We should not be fooled again into
accepting the safety of a toxic chemical on the blessing of the FDA and
saturation advertising. In terms of potential long-term human toxicity we
should regard sucralose with its chemical cousin DDT, the insecticide now
outlawed because of its horrendous long term toxicities at even minute trace
levels in human, avian, and mammalian tissues.
"Synthetic chemical sweeteners are generally unsafe for human consumption.
This toxin was given the chemical name "sucralose" which is a play on the
technical name of natural sugar, sucrose. One is not the other. One is food,
the other is toxic; don't be deceived."
Dr. Bowen also calls attention to another seldom recognized and deadly
permanent effect of these chemicals: "Aspartame, sold as NutraSweet, Equal,
E951, Canderel, Benevia and under other names, is a hypersensitization agent
which causes Polychemical Sensitivity syndrome. Chlorocarbons strongly
induce uncurable hypersensitivity diseases which are now becoming rampant."
(James Bowen, M.D.)
Doctor Bowen has spent 20 years researching artificial sweeteners after his
use of aspartame resulted in being diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease. Dr
Bowen's intention is to warn the world of the toxicity of tabletop poisons
like aspartame, Splenda and Neotame.

Subject: Done in tandem, breath work and stretching are the best support for pain relief
I would also add - drink more water!!
Minimum of 4 quarts per day for adults...
REMEDIES: Stretching Is an Important Pain Remedy
From "wildmouse" email@example.com
Date: Fri Jun 16, 2006 2:39 pm
Stretching Is an Important Pain Remedy. Next to breathing and breath work, stretching is the most beneficial exercises we can do for better health. Done in tandem, breath work and stretching are the best support for easing aches, pain, tension, headaches, tight muscles and unexplained pain elsewhere in the body.
Just as there are different types of flexibility, there are also different types of stretching. Stretches are either dynamic (meaning they involve motion) or static (meaning they involve no motion). Dynamic stretches affect dynamic flexibility and static stretches affect static flexibility (and dynamic flexibility to some degree). When done properly, stretching can do more than just increase flexibility.
Benefits of stretching include:
*enhanced physical fitness
*enhanced ability to learn and perform skilled movements
*increased mental and physical relaxation
*enhanced development of body awareness
*reduced risk of injury to joints, muscles, and tendons
*reduced muscular soreness
*reduced muscular tension
*increased suppleness due to stimulation of the production of chemicals which, lubricate connective tissues
*reduced severity of painful menstruation (dysmenorrhea) in females
Stretching your body's muscles will actually enhance the healing process. Long, slow static stretching will help to increase blood flow and circulation, eliminating stasis and help to warm and invigorate the muscles and in turn lubricate the ligaments and joints.
One good over all stretch for your body is to lie on the floor and gently bring your knees up to your chest. Once there, put a little pressure on your knees with two hands. Gently raise your head up toward the knees. Breath, in, out, in out.....slowly. Stretch, then relax. Repeat.
One of the best over all stretches is the Sun Salutation.
You can find it here: http://www.peacefulmind.com/yoga_therapy.htm

Monday, June 12, 2006
1 lb almonds - blanched
1t - 1T teal salt
1 - 2 t powdered rosemary
2T or more of dried rosemary sprigs
Soak the almonds over night (longer is OK too) in water mixedwith the Real salt and powdered rosemary - in the refrigerator. Drain almonds and dehydrate slowly until crunchy.
A VERYlow oven works, but a temperature-controlled dehydrator is best. I keep the oven as low as possible, but so that it still comes on now and then. Stir almonds occasionally and taste-test until they are at the desired crispness. This can take from 4 - 6 hours or even over night - depending upon your oven and the humidity, etc.
Pour almonds into a bowl and drizzle olive oil (or coconut oil) over them - just to lightly coat. Stir in dried rosemary sprigs (I love these, so I'm VERY generous with them). Sprinkle a little extraRealSalt, if needed.
Be sure to taste the almond with a sprig of rosemary...divine!

High-School - Certificate of Completion
The "Certificate of Completion or Attendance" that is being offered in lieu of high school diplomas, is a part of Bush's "No Child Left Behind".
This is how it works:
It is for students who are unable to pass both the Language Arts and Math portions of the 10th grade State Student Assessment Exams.
Students must take the same 10th grade test over in the 11th and 12th grades until they pass both portions. If they are unable to pass the 10th grade test by the 12th grade then they have two options:
1. Drop out and go to a GED program or,
2. accept a "Certificate of Completion" - it is NOT a diploma.
Once a student accepts it, they cannot ever get a diploma or a GED....!
A certificate of completion means that a student can never (as long as they live):
1. go to the armed services
2. go to college
3. go to trade school
4. go to journeyman's school
5. go to beauty school
6. go to culinary arts school
7. get a federal loan in their lifetime
This is the portion of NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND (2001) that Bush slipped in during the 2004 revision of the NCLB bill.
It has not been publicized.
At a high school in Indiana, in 2005, there were 87 seniors in the graduation class.
Five got diplomas and 82 got "Certificates of >Completion".
This is being referred to as the "Paper Plantation".
It is better for students to drop out and get into a GED program so they may seek other forms of education, later in life, if they desire to do so.
All 50 states have "Certificates of Completion or Attendance".
Please pass this information along to EVERYONE you know who has school age children. Clergy, please preach it from the pulpits. Our people MUST know this information.
Thank you & stay blessed.

All of us know that stress ages us quickly. And for those of you who still think you need caffeine to keep going... in time, stress and caffeine contribute to adrenal exhaustion. When this happens, important hormones are depleted and you will end up highly fatigued.
Caffeine accelerates aging by impairing immunity, which occurs throughthe elevation of stress hormones, nutrition depletion, and depression of DHEA.
According to Stephen Chernisek, author of "Caffeine Blues," caffeine also does the following in the body:
1. Raises blood sugar levels and disrupts sugar-regulating effect of insulin
2. Raises fatty acid levels in the blood
3. Raises homocysteine levels, which greatly increases the diabetic's risk for cardiovascular disease
4. Causes vascular resistance (circulation is reduced)
5. And caffeine raises stress hormone levels which is a primary risk factor for diabetes
Get rid of caffeine if you are serious about preserving your youth and having long term health.

(Jan's note: I kept thinking just one cup of coffee a day wouldn't hurt... but then after about a year of being pain-free (which was FABULOUS, since I've recovered from Fibromyalgia) I started aching again and my teeth started acting up too! In fact, it seems my right rear top molar, just in front of where my wisdom tooth used to be, had such a HUGE gap in the gums it was always catching food particles, no matter how many times a day I brushed or flossed... so last Tuesday an emergency situation caused extreme pain and swelling... so I had the dang thing pulled! That poor dentist worked nearly 2 hours to get this mess pulled. As you can see by this photo, my body was (IS) extremely acidic, causing bone to start forming around the roots and back of this molar. No wonder there was a 10 mm gap in my gum line!
P.S. bone spurs on the spine and in shoulder joints and knees and hips are pretty sure to be caused by too much acidity in your body! GET ALKALINE! Drink more water!!! and most importantly - BREATHE better! Breathing is one of THE best ways to control your pH. That breathing controls your pH was something I learned within the past 3 months... blew my mind!!! And so CHEAP!!! Just learn to BREATHE better! Give me a call... I'll show you how!
